Now that we are officially one lovely day into spring, let’s talk about organizing your wardrobe closet. This is an essential step for anyone, especially if you live in a small space. From our own experience and tips we’ve learned from friends and the Internet, we’re here to help you get organized! So clear your schedule and dedicate a day to do some spring cleaning.
First things first. If you’re scared to open your closet for fear that just might create an avalanche of sweaters, jeans, skirts, etc. then you better make yourself a drink. We may be here a while…
Here’s a simple and refreshing cocktail recipe from the Backyard Bartender. Anything with brown sugar and blueberries sounds good to us, so make yourself a drink, turn on some music and get ready to purge your closet!
Tip 1: Store all your winter clothing! There’s nothing more exciting than stowing away those wool sweaters, scarves and gloves, unless, of course, you happen to enjoy the cold weather. Make sure to get all your winter clothes cleaned before storing, and if your items are wool, pack them with a cedar block to keep those pesky moths.
Tip 2: Now that your winter clothes are out of the way, it’s time to go through your wardrobe and purge! We know, it’s a bittersweet feeling but it’s something that we all have to go through. How do you know it’s time to get rid of it? If you haven’t worn it in a year then it’s time to let go. You’ve gone through every season in a year’s time so obviously if it hasn’t been worn then chances are, you won’t wear it next year. Donate it!
Tip 3: We saw this tip on Apartment Therapy and it’s a fun and great idea. Schedule a clothing swap with your friends! Since everyone always loves saving money, swapping clothes with your friends allows you to get new items without paying the price. Plus, you won’t feel guilty getting rid of something knowing you’re recycling it to a friend! So order some take-out and make a girls night out of it.
Tip 4: If you’re having trouble getting rid of your clothes, then pull a Carrie Bradshaw and get the opinion of your friends! Obviously having your perspective alone will cause you to be bias and you’ll be more tempted to keep things you don’t really need.
Tip 5: Once you’re done going through all your clothes, organize the remaining items by hanging them in color order or category (dresses, shirts, etc.) Try using slim, velvet hangers to avoid silk items from falling off and getting that annoying shoulder mark from ordinary hangers.
Tip 6: Repeat the same steps with your shoes (side-note: this might be a bit more painful) and once you’re finished, hide your favorite fragrance like chamomile, lavender, etc. to keep your closet smelling fresh!
