DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT – LIONETTE

Gems & Jewels by LIONETTE

Gems & Jewels by LIONETTE

All the wonderful clothing we buy, keep, and wear would mean nothing without the little enhancements we add that often times mean more to us than the clothing alone. Whether it’s an engraved locket that’s a family heirloom, a watch you received upon your graduation from college, a pair of earrings a significant other gifted you, a ring you proudly purchased for yourself with your first paycheck, or a collection of woven friendship bracelets you and your friends made together to pass the hours at summer camp, some pieces of jewelry can affect the impact of our style in that the strong sentiments attached to them make us feel even better in the clothes we’re wearing.

That’s part of the art of dressing – seamlessly threading bits of yourself into a whole look, and that ability to choose which parts we want to share is totally empowering. Many days I find myself wearing a ring one of my sisters bought for me that I wear, not only because the subtly iridescent coin pearl sits so beautifully in its hammered silver nest, but, because I see her when I wear it. She’s been in medical school abroad for the better part of the last 4 years and will soon be graduating but the ring will hold her presence long after she’s come home and I’ve stopped missing her.

Mushiness aside, obviously not everything we own is directly connected to some strong memory we have or feeling we experienced and that’s perfectly fine. Some pieces are just beautiful and speak to us, leading us to believe that our lives might be the tiniest bit more glamorous if we added them to our jewelry boxes or earring trees. The Designer Spotlight falls on Lionette for precisely this reason.

Noa Sade is the Israeli-born designer behind this brand that has fans in fashion blogger Leandra Medine, Rihanna, Rachel Bilson, Kristen Bell, and Heidi Klum. Sade comes from a family of artists and is self-taught in the craft of her own art. Her line, Lionette, came to fruition in September of 2009 possessing a unique aesthetic dictated by strong lines, shapes, & colors and providing a clear new voice in the jewelry industry. Her use of metal and stone is youthful and modern, yet seemingly retains exotic remnants of her Middle Eastern background. Alluring and wearable with just enough flash for both day and evening events, her pieces stand alone as strongly as they do when layered together. As with any designer, their visions live in the pieces they create and we at SINGER22 are happy to share Noa Sade’s visions through her jewelry line, Lionette, with you!

Color Theory

For those of you that are unfamiliar with Pantone, it’s a company universally known for, among other things, dictating color trends. As of December 2013 we know that the Pantone Color Of The Year 2014 is RADIANT ORCHID, a warm purple tinged with pink and fuschia that is shockingly flattering on various skin tones.

Purple/Pink/Fuschia

The alluring color made its way onto many of the Spring 2014 runways at Fashion Week in September. The punchy purple waltzed down the catwalks at Max Mara and Marc Jacobs unaltered producing a powerful and feminine presence.

At DKNY a pleasantly diluted version created a soft watercolor-like transparency yet retained its eye-catching nature when draped over a stark minty background, while at Barbara Casasola and Missoni the color took on a decidedly pinker shade imbuing an even greater sense of joy into the already happy hue.

Vibrant and captivating, Radiant Orchid is but one of the colors named in the Fashion Color Report for Spring 2014 (also hand picked by Pantone), which includes a series of slightly sun-bleached hues that are more saturated and energetic than traditional pastels.

We Love Our Boyfriends

Boy - Oh Boyfriend

Boy – Oh Boyfriend

Boyfriend fashion has its own page on Wikipedia. ITS OWN PAGE! Then again, when you think about the impact that men’s fashion has had on what we wear, it’s not all that nuts.

From the moment I tried on my first blazer back in high school I knew I was in love. I’d found a piece that made me look put together, looked good with at least 70% of my wardrobe, and wasn’t too frou-frou. Petals, lace, and ruffles are perfectly pretty and extremely popular flourishes in women’s fashion, but these were never the most appealing fashion elements to me. Streamlined pants, jeans, shorts, loose tees, over-sized cardigans, jackets, and flats provided the blueprints for my aesthetic to build from so, naturally, when I slipped into a blazer it already felt like home.

Imagine my reaction when I started seeing starlets in my tabloids wearing these odd yet strangely attractive loose-fitting jeans. Baggy but flattering, sometimes distressed but almost always cuffed, and – get this – they looked good with nearly everything hanging in my closet (including my impressive blazer collection)! Fashion editorials even suggested I wear them with heels instead of my favorite flats, top-siders, or Converse. I didn’t think it could work and then I tried on an olive leather wedge sandal, eating my words as I admired my newly updated look in my bedroom mirror.

Boyfriend Jeans + Fancy Feet = Awesome

Boyfriend Jeans + Fancy Feet = Awesome

The boyfriend jean is as much a staple in our denim collections now as flared and skinny silhouettes are. The shape comes in a variety of denim washes & treatments and is now available in a range of materials including khaki, corduroy, and sweatshirt fabric. Celebrities have been rocking this look since the late 2000′s so, if you take your cues from them, you should have a few in your closet already. No matter what your signature style is, let your boyfriends contrast nicely with a pleated blouse and ladylike pearls, balance a sweet floral-patterned girly top, toughen up a silk cami, or enhance the boyishness of your half-tucked Oxford shirt. Head to SINGER22.com for a huge selection of styles so you can emulate fashionable stars like Olivia, Rihanna, and Jessica.

Flat Out Awesome

As a tall person with a fear of heel-induced heights, I admit I’m a total sucker for flats. Fashionable wedge-less sneakers? Check. Ballet flats? Got ‘em. Brogues? Ditto. Round toe or pointed, leather or canvas, dainty or mannish – if they’re shy a heel, then they’re most likely on my shoe rack.

It’s been a long time since women have been able to wear flats without being considered tomboys so this isn’t a post on the revolutionary idea of a walkable yet feminine shoe. Rather, I’m taking this opportunity to focus particularly on some new or refurbished shoe shapes that you might not have considered adding to your closet yet. For example Vince recently branched out from just clothing into footwear and their efforts have yielded some pretty nifty results. Observe:

The Iona 2 is a sort of slip-on desert shoe. Its perforated leather base is both contemporary and sporty which nicely makes way for the elastic inserts. It looks and feels like a real traveler’s shoe being that it has an androgynous shape and seems to retain the quality of looking better with wear. The closed season-less shape even allows you to wear it well past the summer months.

The silhouette of the Nina shoe might look familiar. Jenni Kayne can be credited with the proliferation of her D’Orsay Flat back in 2011 (especially with the help of Jessica Alba who was seen wearing it in a range of colors) but the design doesn’t seem to have lost traction as it’s still attracting buyers and even getting a few updates like ankle straps and fun prints or textures. Vince’s version comes in a classic black leather and acts as both a low key sort of shoe and one suitable for a work setting; a trait achieved by the perfect ratio of covered to exposed skin.

Joie added footwear to its long list of laid back, yet fashionable products back in 2007. This season their designers brought us plenty of sandals and wearable heels to go with just about anything we’re planning on wearing once the sun comes out. Of note is their Hemlock shoe which is a delightful little espadrille married with a lace-up. The peachy nude python embossed leather makes it an easy pairing for sundresses and beach get-ups alike.

Pastel Treats

Rainbow-jordan-almonds-candies-e1397850336688-1024x460

I may not have a particularly developed sweet tooth but I have to say that one of the most beautiful treats I’ve seen are Jordan almonds – sugar coated nuts that come in an Easter approved assortment of soft pastels.

Pastels are a common trend in Spring collections and this season will be no different. Modern shapes and structured fabrics work surprisingly well in these unripened hues but, even when the fit is more relaxed, the pieces don’t have to be saccharine. The Spring 2014 runways were full of robin’s egg blues, bleached yellows, delicate pinks, and minty fresh greens that surprisingly never ended up looking like grown up baby clothing.

nyfw14_trends_pastels

Athletic and menswear themes permeated the endless selections of warm weather garments helping to balance out the typically feminine palette. Additionally, the impact of pastel fashion can be controlled by the wearer so that if one wakes up feeling the need to project a girlish flirty vibe then Chiara Ferragni‘s approach might be preferable. Pink, white, and blue sing harmoniously with generous embellishments, feminine shapes, and modern textiles.

If you tend towards a more pared down look, though, then let Angelica Ardasheva (another excellent foreign fashion blogger) influence your style. Light blue jeans and a mint green sweater are anchored by navy and tan neutrals for an excellent transitional ensemble.

And obviously your options don’t end there. Visit SINGER22.com for some of our own pastel treats to update your spring wardrobe! Whether it’s a leather jacket in the softest rose, bi-color light blue skinny jeans with a tuxedo twist, or a three tier necklace with faded jade charms, you’ll find something to satisfy your craving!

Awesome Aussie Style

We know American style is eclectically modern, French style is effortlessly chic, British style is exquisitely undone, and Australian style is… Anybody? ANYbody?

That’s right. If you haven’t taken notice yet of our fellow English speakers on the other side of the world and how they put together a look, you should hop to it! Sydney has earned the right to be lumped in with the likes of New York, Paris, and London when discussing style because it’s developed a strong sense of it that is uniquely Australian. Their country produces clothing that is easy, joyful, and completely of the moment. Get a load of these street style looks from Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia and try not to smile!

So, the correct ending to the above sentence, “and Australian style is…”, is exuberantly charming! Trade in poses and coy smirks for big, toothy smiles and candid humor, because that’s how the Aussies do it.

SINGER22 is the place to explore Australian brands and infuse your look with their bright attitude. Check out Finders Keepers for strong colors and clean lines, Keepsake for contemporary yet feminine pieces, Nookie for sexy dresses, RES Denim for great jeans, and this amazingly versatile vest from Cameo!

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT – ELEVEN PARIS

She's peachy keen in the Eleven Paris Laun top

She’s peachy keen in the Eleven Paris Laun top

Admittedly, Eleven Paris wasn’t a label I was familiar with until recently and that’s a blooming shame. This brand shares the same birth year as SINGER22 (2003) and, while one is a label and the other a retailer, both curate contemporary taste and unfussy style.

Silk screen printed T-shirts are a cornerstone of their look which is further accented by athletic touches and an underlying rocker tone. The designers glean inspiration from their travels abroad and from their ravenous scouring of the internet, particularly tumblrs. By mixing humor with a strong sense of style, simple tees with unique jackets, and detached coolness with deliberate expression, Eleven Paris has garnered our attention and a DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT.

I’m impressed with not only Eleven Paris’s styling direction but with the fortification of their brand by renowned artists from various arenas. Musicians, photographers, and other pop culture icons find themselves or their work immortalized in cheeky images on wearable pieces, further distinguishing this brand from its peers. What’s more, with the 90′s experiencing a renaissance in the fashion world it is only appropriate to feature a brand whose current collection reflects that era with true panache.

SINGER22 NEWS – STYLE Update – Alexander Wang x H&M

Hello all!

My name is Jackie and I’m the new staff writer at SINGER22. I’m stoked to start sharing my thoughts and interacting with you guys as I myself am an active and avid reader with a high regard for pop culture and its intrinsic link to fashion. I’m not one for lengthy introductions so let’s get cracking, shall we?

Exciting news for H&M shoppers, myself included:

Alexander Wang is joining the long list of established designers including Karl Lagerfeld, Versace, and Maison Martin Margiela who’ve collaborated with the Swedish merchandiser on collections. Wang’s collection will target both men & women and will be available starting November 6th, 2014; a rather convenient release date as it stands 2 weeks before my birthday. I guess I know what I’m wearing before I know where I’ll be celebrating. Sweet.

!!EXCITING COLLABORATION!!

!!EXCITING COLLABORATION!!

For those of you less familiar with Alexander Wang’s aesthetic, the American designer is known for his urban edge on a minimalistic foundation. He tends to work within a predominantly black, grey, and white color palette but sometimes surprises with shots of primary, pastel, or darker tinted hues. This collection certainly has everyone, celebrities and non-celebrities alike, salivating for a chance to refresh our fall wardrobes, and yet I was just getting excited for the long overdue warm weather here in NY…

In the meantime stock up on comparably modern looks from SINGER22 like this carved shoulder racerback tank and this sleek leather skort.

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

Red Hot or Pretty in Pink. Which Will You Be?

Pretty in Pink Let’s face it: Valentine’s Day can be a very stressful holiday. For instance, if you’re single commuting to work on Valentine’s Day you’ll notice every couple holding hands, stealing a kiss or posing for a picture-perfect moment in front of Times Square. On an ordinary morning, you wouldn’t even recognize these moments because you’re too busy dodging these said couples on your way to work after the trainee barista at Starbucks just messed up your coffee order.

On the other hand, if you’re taken your desk will be flooded with roses and your office-mates will be throwing all the “Ooh’s” and “Ahh’s” at you…and eying that luxurious chocolate that has yet to be opened. You know your significant other has planned a romantic, candlelit dinner for the two of you at a restaurant you don’t often venture to.

There is, however, one thing in common on Valentine’s Day whether you are single or taken, and that’s looking like you just walked out of a photo shoot. We’re talking hair done, sultry makeup and an outfit that’s going to make you the center of attention. That’s where we come in! Continue reading

Because it’s Wednesday & We All Need Hump Day Inspiration

YouTube Preview Image

This morning as I was driving into work this song by Baz Luhrmann came on the radio. I haven’t heard it since high school and it instantly brought a smile to my tired face.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Everybody’s Free To Wear Sunscreen, here’s a little background: In 1997, columnist Mary Schmich wrote an essay for the Chicago Tribune giving much-needed life advice to youths. The advice from this famous essay serve as the lyrics to Luhrmann’s song.

Take an extra five minutes out of your day to listen to this song. It’s some of the best life advice I’ve ever heard. Of course, never take anything for granted. I hope this gets you through the rest of your workweek.

Happy Hump Day, everyone!
