Advice on How To Get a Job – From Someone Who Has a Job

The unspoken secret in life is that no one knows what they’re doing. The people we consider “smart” are just better at guessing what’s to come. The president, Heidi Klum, your mom – they’re all winging it. If you want to get what you want, more specifically a job, you just have to convince everyone else that you know what you’re doing. The world is a superficial place where we assume things based on what we’ve experienced or stereotypes we’ve learned. Your first impression is EVERYTHING. Everything.

I understand wanting to be a wild, free individual and not wanting to cater to society and give in to social norms – but having pink cotton candy hair is not the most important thing. Think about who has had pink hair – P!nk, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, circus performers. If you’re applying for positions similar to theirs, then go ahead and dye your hair, otherwise I’m not sure if I’d trust a Nicki Minaj look-alike doing my taxes. (more…)

How to Be a Good Liar: The Truth About Lying

I lie, you lie, we all lie. If you’re saying to yourself as you read this that you don’t lie – then you just lied.

Get over yourself.

It’s not okay to lie as Pinocchio taught us all as small children. But the truth is your nose won’t grow and YOU WILL GET EATEN ALIVE in the real world if you don’t learn to do it correctly. So what I’m saying is – it is okay, even necessary, to lie in certain situations. It’ll get where you want to go, you can protect people’s feelings (including your own), and it makes your stories more interesting. Just don’t be a jerk and lie in critical or immoral situations. I’m not your mom – you know the situations I’m talking about. (more…)

Fashion Faux Pas: How to Not Be a Victim

Fashion

Hope you’re all enjoying this extension of winter and know that the groundhog has been rightfully indicted (LOL). Check the news if you don’t know what I’m referring to. We’re all still bundled up in coats and scarves in NYC. Try a SMYTHE blazer under a detachable fur coat collar for a look similar to mine.

A ‘faux pas’, as I’m sure you all know, is the refined French way that we like to refer to a social blunder. Because everything sounds better in French, including our embarrassing fashion mishaps.

So how do you avoid becoming a Fashion Faux Pas victim? (more…)

Street Style Update – Lucky Charms – Do you have one?

Lucky Charms

I hope you all had a grand St. Patrick’s Day and are shuffling back to your daily schedules seamlessly. It was uplifting to see all of NYC come together this weekend to paint the town the same shade of Kelly green, and everyone adorning themselves in lucky shamrocks to celebrate. I, being the nonconformist that I am, wore my own special lucky charm – my lucky bullet, tucked neatly under my Confessions-of-a-Shopaholic-esque, festive green scarf.

Everyone who knows me, knows I wear my lucky bullet every day. Even if for some odd reason I don’t have it on, I still like to credit its existence for the good fortune that comes my way. People ask me “Why the bullet?” and I reply “Because it was there when I didn’t die.” It was one of those crazy NY movie moments that I’d have to explain to you over coffee. For a similar look to mine, try pairing a Donni Charm scarf with any one of Jennifer Zeuner lucky-charm-worthy necklaces.  (more…)

My Cyber Monday Wishlist!

Dresses

In my opinion, Cyber Monday is way better than Black Friday. I rather lay in my bed on my laptop and score awesome deals than wait outside on a freezing line for hours and risk not getting what I waited for. It’s also just so much easier and convenient. Take 20% off your SINGER22 order today with code: CYBER and it ends tonight so hurry up and go fill that shopping bag!

I put together my wishlist for Cyber Monday that mostly consists of holiday/winter inspired pieces. Take a look below!

  1. BOULEE Avery Lace Dress in black: A girly dress with sheer lace sleeves, a full skirt and an open back.
  2. Parker Geometric Beaded Dress: The perfect holiday dress with a rich hue, beading and a dropped waist and draped skirt.
  3. Elizabeth and James Lisette Dress: Body-hugging long sleeve dress with a layered tulle skirt.

Trending: Soft Velvet

Velvet Blazer

Velvet isn't exactly the easiest fabric to pull off, in my opinion, but it's definitely a trend worth trying! Velvet can take an outfit from simple to sophisticated and chic. Here are some velvet pieces worth your considertation.

Personally, I have never been for or against velvet. Maybe because I've never come across the right piece? When we got in these beautiful velvet suits from Elizabeth and James, I instantly became a fan. The Velet Rex Blazer is a must-have to any wardrobe. I love the way the velvet texture looks when paired with a silk blouse and jeans. A velvet blazer is somewhat of a timeless piece that you can always style in different ways to keep it up-to-date. The Velvet Winnie Trouser may be a bit more difficult to pull off so if you can then go for it…and know that I am jealous. (more…)

Trending: Military Green

Jacket

One of my favorite colors (ever) is military green. It’s a neutral and goes with great with anything. What’s not to love? Plus, it’s a pretty color for fall so here are some items to keep in mind.

This SMYTHE Colorblock Blazer is super stylish because you can wear it with a fitted tee and jeans and you will instantly dress up your outfit. This lightweight TEXTILE Elizabeth and James Kelsey Parka has a snap button placet with two flap pockets. Its slouchy fit gives you an effortlessly cool look. I am obsessed with the style of anoraks so it’s no surprise I love this SMYTHE Light Anorak too. The lined collar and cinched waist make it more girly and stylish. (more…)

Spotted: Emma Watson in J Brand

Scuba Legging

Emma Watson was spotted wearing J Brand Scuba Skinny Leggings, which are super trendy right now and fit great. They feature a wetsuit-like material that is comfortable and hugs every curve.

If you want Emma's look try wearing similar Kate Frances Evelyn Blazer in white paired with a Splendid Layers Tank and Jeffrey Campbell Koons Shoe.

A Few of My Favorite Items

Equipment

Aside from being Blog Editor, I also write all the product descriptions for the online site, which means I get to touch and inspect every piece of clothing we receive. The plus side to this is that I get to feel the fabric and see the patterns up close and personal. The bad part is that I pretty much want every single thing and having just graduated college I'm kind of on a budget. Nonetheless, I put together a list of a few items I really love.

The second I saw this Elizabeth and James Velvet Rex Blazer I fell in love. It comes in black and navy but I think the navy shows off the velvet texture a bit nicer and it pops more. It instantly takes an outfit from cute to sophisticated and chic. (more…)

I’m Obsessed With: Kate Frances Evelyn Blazer

If I had to choose one celebrity closet to raid, I would most definitely pick Kourtney Kardashian. She has the nicest style and always manages to look her best. Plus, I wouldn't mind sneaking my way into Kim and Khloe's closets either!

Kourtney loves her Kate Frances Evelyn Blazer, pictured here in three different colors. This blazer is great because it can instantly dress up a casual outfit. It's open placket, strong shoulders and cropped fit makes it the perfect go-to blazer.

I also love the fact it comes in a variety of colors. Who says you only need one?! The Evelyn Blazer is so versatile it can be worn with just about anything. Try it with a Feel The Piece V Maxi Dress or throw it on over an LnA Short Sleeve Crew Neck Tee paired with Current/Elliott Stiletto in White Star. The possibilities are endless!

Watch Out: Lucky Magazine Features Our Smythe Warbler Tribute Jacket for Anti-Bullying

Warbler Tribute Jacket

Our Smythe Warbler Tribute Jacket was recently featured by Lucky magazine for good reason. Not only is this jacket cute, but it's to benefit a number of anti-bullying organizations in both the USA and Canada.

The inspiration behind this striped, cropped sleeve jacket is Kurt Hummel, Glee's openly gay character played by Chris Colfer. In the show, which is one of my favorites, Kurt is a rising star who battles daily discrimination from his peers.
