Let's face it, women go through many obstacles in life that men will never have to endure. You've planned a tropical getaway and before you leave for the airport you get a visit from your oh-so-timely monthly friend. Or, the day has finally came to give birth to that little baby that has been using your womb and body as its mansion for, ya know, the last nine months. No big deal, right? Women get through these things every day. There is, however, one obstacle no woman will ever get over…unless you're Victoria Beckham.
The obstacle? Wearing platform heels night after night, hobbling (or crawling depending how far along your night is) through the streets. You hope and wish there's a place to sit for a second to give your freshly pedicured feet a break. For the record, I don't care how much you claim heels don't hurt your feet after dancing for hours, girl you are not fooling me. I know when someone needs a bathroom buddy you offer to go just to get a second of relief when using the toilet.
So why do we torture ourselves? Well, to look fabulous! I also think wearing heels give a girl a huge wave of confidence. Heels have a way of completing any outfit, making your legs look like Alessandra Ambrosio and making us short girls stand taller. Just how long can the average women last wearing heels?
As reported in the New York Post, a survey at Britain's College of Podiatry states the average woman feels the wrath of heels after one hour, six minutes and 48 seconds after cramming her toes into a favorite pair of heels. In my opinion, this sounds like a short amount of time. Can I last in heels for hours? No, but I can endure more than one hour, six minutes and 48 seconds.
The school surveyed 2,000 men and women. A mere 12% of men said they would purposefully wear uncomfortable shoes…and to think women do it on a daily basis. “It’s shocking how little regard we show for our feet,” said Lorraine Jones, a podiatrist at the college.
I'm no expert on heel-wearing considering I rather wear flats every day, but I have a few guidelines that I stick to regarding heels:
1. I make sure to walk around the store for a good amount of time to see how comfortable they are. Granted you won't know how truly comfortable they are until you are out all night, but it's still good to make sure you can walk steady in them.
2. If your bag is big enough, get fold-able flats like Yosi Samra to stuff in your bag. I can't tell you how many times I've been grateful to have these. Are they fashionable? No, not at all but your feet will sure be happy. Under no circumstances should you walk barefoot on a city sidewalk!
3. Find the type of heels that work best for you. I love wedges because I think they are way more comfortable than stilettos. Wedges have more support and they are basically like elevated flats.
